What is a Tütenhüter?
The Tütenhüter is a simple yet clever bag sealing system from the böörds AG in Switzerland. Since 2018, the chip clip of this start-up business has provided a watertight and airtight seal for open packaging made of aluminium, paper or plastic used for, among other things, tea, spices, different snacks, cheese, noodles, coffee and pet food as well as liquids. In addition, you can put the Tütenhüter in the dishwasher and use it to freeze your sealed food. With its Tütenhüter, böörds wants to counteract food waste by keeping food fresh for longer thanks to the airtight seal that protects food from spoiling too quickly. When the Tütenhüter is not in use, it can be stored in a drawer or kitchen cupboard to save space.
How do I seal a bag?
The Tütenhüter is easy to use. With the sizes XS, S, M, L and XL, you can close bags and packaging of different sizes. Follow these steps to seal a bag:
- Fold the opening of the bag over once.
- Slide the Tütenhüter into the fold so that the grey part of the Tütenhüter is underneath and the coloured part of the stick is above it.
- Keep pushing the Tütenhüter along the fold until it has sealed the entire packaging.
The individual steps for closing a bag with this bag clip can also be found in the
Tütenhüter instructions (available in German only).
How can I package something so that it is airtight?
To package something airtight, the air has to escape from the packaging before it is sealed. For example, place a piece of meat in a watertight plastic bag and some water in a sufficiently large bowl. Now submerge the bag with the meat in the water so that only the opening is above the water. The water will force the air out. Then slide the Tütenhüter through the fold of the bag to seal it completely. Make sure no air remains in the bag or gets back in. Vacuum-sealing of food items has many advantages. It is a way of extending the shelf life of many foods and of storing them in the refrigerator or freezer without taking up too much space. In addition, the food can be frozen without freezer burn.
