Spice rack with strong magnets
Here is my magnet application, which is not only particularly original and useful but also creative and highly aesthetic: the magnetic spice rack, guaranteed to turn heads and difficult to surpass in practicality.
It is easy to make:
- Select a steel plate of a suitable size, paint it if necessary to match your kitchen and screw it onto the wall.
- Get round 100-ml wide mouth glass containers with Bakelite screw caps.
- Hide a disc magnet 20x5 mm under the plastic lining of each cap.
- Fill the glass container with a spice of your choice and screw it shut tightly.
- Label the glass if necesssary with a waterproof marker or sticker.
- Let the filled glass hop onto the steel plate with an audible pop.
You can now sort your spices however you like: by colour, filling level, grain size, frequency of use, expiration date, etc.
Have fun making your own spice rack!
Magnetic spice tins
Addition from customer Marie-Theres Tschiersch, Berlin:
I poured spices from different brands into tin containers with a transparent lid to create a more uniform-looking rack.
On the bottom of the spice tins, I glued a round piece of self-adhesive magnetic sheet MS-A4-STIC
and attached them to a magnetic board.
One empty magnetic spice tin including magnetic sheet weighs about 40 g.
Filled up it weighs no more than 100 g, which is no problem for this magnetic sheet.
Wooden spice rack
Addition from customer Michael Küster from Michelbach:
I simply milled deep holes (diameter of a test tube) into softwood and glued disc magnets type S-15-08-N
into the holes.
Then I put a counter magnet of the same type into each test tube and kept it in place with a small cork disc.
This way, the magnet stays in place when you use the test tube and the spices do not come in contact with the magnets.
The wooden spice rack can be built in many different sizes depending on your needs.
This spice rack holds about 50 test tubes and rests sturdily on a wooden base.
I had to drill deeper and deeper into the wooden beam with the milling cutter until the magnets could hold the glasses horizontally with their contents.
I find the wooden spice rack very useful and functional and it helps us to organise our spices and showcases them in our kitchen.
Super magnets: You are great!
Spice rack for the refrigerator
Addition by Simon Redel, Germany 2023:I have a free-standing fridge with ferromagnetic side panels at home.
Since these are still unused, I came up with the idea of a magnetic wooden spice rack.
The spice rack
In preparation, I cut eight boards out of plywood:
In preparation, I cut eight boards out of plywood:
- 3 pieces 50 x 5 cm
- 3 pieces 50 x 10 cm
- 2 pieces 65 x 11 cm
I matched the height of the individual cubby holes to fit the taller oil bottles.
To prevent the spices and oil bottles from sliding off the shelf in case of vibrations, I added a piece of wood to the front of the shelves.
To ensure that the shelving unit holds together rock-solid, I glued the pieces together with wood glue from the home improvement store and also hammered nails into the corners.
Then I let my creation dry overnight.
The mounting bracket
To attach the shelf to the refrigerator, I used channel magnets type CSR-80-20-04-N, which I screw-fastened to rectangular wooden blocks. I made six of these pieces in total.
Using wood glue, I glued wooden picks onto two of these wooden blocks so they would cover the front half of the block.
I then glued the second piece into each upper corner of the shelf itself.
This creates a bracket into which I can later hook the spice rack.
After I hung the magnetic shelf on the fridge, I attached another wooden block with channel magnet to the top and the middle shelf to act as additional supports.
The magnetic force of these six magnets is enough to hold my shelf filled with spices and various oils on the fridge without it sliding down.
In the video, you can easily follow the individual steps.
With this spice rack, I now have all spices and oils within easy reach and more space on my kitchen work surface.
Note from the supermagnete team:
Please keep in mind that the number of necessary magnets and their required adhesive force depends heavily on the ferromagnetic surface and the weight of the stocked shelf.
Therefore, when choosing magnets, pay particular attention to the displacement force information.
Magnetic spice rack
Addition by Rimoco, Germany, 2024:To keep all of your spices within reach, the company Rimoco came up with the idea of building a magnetic spice rack.
In their YouTube video, they show how you can recreate the spice rack using simple materials and a little DIY magic.
To recreate the magnetic spice rack, you will need the following:
- Disc magnet Ø 10 mm, height 5 mm
- Black sheet metal (brushed), measuring 40 x 50 cm
- Wall plugs and screws with decorative caps
- Metal drill
You can easily follow the individual steps in the video.
With this spice rack, your favourite spices are always at hand yet stored in a space-saving way.
Put an end to the spice chaos.
